On October 27th, the next generation of the Kindle Paperwhite will be available, with a larger display, faster page-turning, and a week’s worth of battery life.
Amazon has announced the release of two new Kindle Paperwhite models: the 8GB Paperwhite and the 32GB Signature Edition, both of which will be available for purchase at the end of October. The redesign is intended to improve the overall reading experience, with Amazon listing some improvements in the official announcement.
The first and most important change is the screen size, which has been increased to 6.8 inches with smaller (10.2mm) bezels. If necessary, the screen can be made about 10% brighter than previous models. There’s also an adjustable warm light and a white-on-black “dark” mode on the display. The Signature Edition is the same as the standard model, but it also includes a front light that automatically adjusts brightness depending on your surroundings.
Both new models also have, according to Amazon, the longest battery life for Kindle devices to date, at 10 weeks. Charging has also been improved, with a USB-C connection that can reach a full charge in about two and a half hours. The Signature Edition also supports Qi wireless charging.
A waterproof 11th Generation Paperwhite with a “kid-friendly” cover, a year of Amazon Kids+, and a two-year warranty is also available. This uses older hardware, but it’s also designed for young children and, at least according to Amazon, saves about $100 off the total price.
Amazon is now accepting preorders for the new Kindle Paperwhite and Paperwhite Signature Edition (as well as Paperwhite Kids). The new Paperwhite costs $139.99, while the Signature Edition costs $189.99. Both versions also include four months of free Kindle Unlimited for a “limited time.”
