T-Mobile is looking into reports of a huge data breach involving Social Security numbers, phone numbers, names, and even residences.
The assertions were made in an “underground forum,” according to T-Mobile. Despite the fact that T-Mobile isn’t mentioned by name in the forum post, the data vendor claims it comes from company servers.
The hacker claims to have collected information on over 100 million people, including smartphone IMEI numbers. For a data packet holding 30 million Social Security numbers and driver’s licenses, the seller is asking for 6 bitcoin, which is around $275,000 at the time of writing.
According to the hacker, they will sell the rest of the data privately.
While T-Mobile investigates the authenticity of the hacker’s claims and whether or not they really obtained the data for 100 million customers, some of the data stolen has been authenticated.
In recent years, T-Mobile has had to deal with a number of data breaches. Personal information was stolen in a cyberattack in 2019, according to the company, although no financial data or Social Security numbers were included.
Another security breach occurred in late 2020, but no personal information was compromised.
If the forum post is correct, the violation is far more serious and might have long-term consequences. T-Mobile reported that it had a total of 104.8 million users on its network in a press release announcing its Q2 financial results.
